Dragons will roar again

Rob Page has admitted that Wales' defeat did not unfurl the way he intended it to just now, speaking with BBC Radio Wales after booking a knockout spot in his first major tournament. "It didn't quite go to plan the press in the first half," he says. "We addressed it at half-time and we managed to get Ethan Ampadu as the centre of the diamond and get him on the ball a little bit more at the start of the second half. "The sending-off changed the course of the game. I haven't seen it again yet. I thought it was harsh to get a booking but to see the red card come out was unbelievable. Then of course it's an even bigger hill to climb."

Page: Game did not go to plan

With four points now from three games, Switzerland are the top-ranked third-place side at Euro 2020 - but will they remain there at the end of play on Wednesday? Currently, Portugal, Austria and Finland all sit just behind them with three points apiece, while Spain and Croatia round out the list with two and one respectively. That's not even including the other sides who could still vault themselves into position. If it means anything for&nbsp;Vladimir Petkovic, four points was more than enough for Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland five years ago - but they still face a nervy wait.

The race for third-place

Robert Mancini had nothing but kind words for his opponents after Italy prevailed in Rome, but the Azzurri boss feels his team were the better side on the day, he tells ITV. "We are happy, we are happy," he says. "But after the group stage, it is a new competition. "The guys are very clever. They want to win every game. They have a good mentality. We changed eight, but played a very good game. Wales are&nbsp;a good team, it was very difficult to win, but I think we deserved to win."

While Wales will await their fate in Amsterdam - hoping likely that Belgium don't get tripped up tomorrow to set up another meeting with the Red Devils, five years on from a shock victory - Italy will pack their bags for the first time in this tournament. They're off to Wembley, for one of two last-16 ties to be held in London, and they will be facing the runner-up from Group C there. Pretty fly for the Italian guys

Aaron Ramsey has more to say to ITV, adding that he feels Ethan Ampadu's red card was a tough call, and that Wales may have nabbed a result on another day against the Azzurri. "I feel sorry for Ethan&nbsp;- it was a bit harsh maybe," he adds.&nbsp;"He certainly caught him, it was one of those decisions that could have gone either way. "It was important to create a couple of opportunities and we could have nicked a draw on another day. We need to be more consistent throughout the game but we are through in second place and we are delighted."

Aaron Ramsey has chimed in on ITV to hail his team-mates after booking themselves into the knockout stages of another major tournament. "It was tough for long periods," he says.&nbsp;"We were up against a great team who have gone 30 games unbeaten - that's some achievement. "But we showed great character, you can never question this team, we always give everything and we dug in.

From dark horses to drop outs

Gareth Bale has now spoken to ITV, and "We knew it would be very difficult from the start. A lot of running and defending, I am proud of the boys. We have made it through. "I didn't see too much of the red card. It was unfortunate. We had to dig deep and we did that. We have to recover now and take the break and get ready to get going again. With my chance I couldn't quite get over the ball, but it makes no difference in the end, we finish second."

Some lovely scenes at Stadio Olimpico now, where Wales have gone to celebrate with their contingent of supporters in the Italian capital. The battle is lost but the war to reach successive European Championship knockout stages is won. Depending on just who falls their way tomorrow too, Gareth Bale and company might fancy a chance at another remarkable run.

Shots! Shots! Shots!

No group-topping heroics from Wales this time around - but they have avoided what threatened so often to become a banana-skin result and kept it to a narrow defeat. Rob Page will take that, particularly given he had to play the last third of the game a man down. Wales however will need to sort themselves out before the next tough test that awaits them; the runners-up of Group B in Amsterdam on Saturday, which could remain any one of Belgium, Russia, Finland or Denmark.

Switzerland nab third-place, Turkey eliminated from Euro 2020

They can't! Switzerland deliver their most impressive performance of Euro 2020 - but it won't be enough to send them through to the knockout stages on their own merti! They'll be forced to sweat on their future over the next three days - but a three-goal raid against Turkey in Baku may have done just about enough. For their opponents, it is the end of the road - they are out of the tournament as they finish bottom of Group A.

It's victory for the Azzurri, a perfect three from three in Group A - and it will surely be Wales who join them automatically in the last-16 unless Switzerland can achieve a remarkable two-goal haul inside a minute!

Back to the Shaq

With absolutely nothing to lose, Roberto Mancini has now sent on goalkeeper&nbsp;Salvatore Sirigu, his nominal squad number one. The Torino shotstopper has very much played second-fiddle throughout his Azzurri career, but will get a game at Euro 2020 for certain now. There's going to be three added minutes in both Rome and Baku.

Victory is less assured for Roberto Mancini and the Azzurri than it seemingly is for Switzerland, but they have plenty of reasons to be cheerful heading into the last-16. Their extended squad has looked very much at home in Rome, perhaps only let down by the inability to finish the many chances they have assembled. Giacomo Raspadori and&nbsp;Bryan Cristante are both on for the hosts now, while Harry Wilson has also joined the action for Wales.

Italy seek cherry to top performance

Burak Yilmaz has gestured for a penalty after an apparent foul in the box following a Turkey corner where his header went wide, but nothing is forthcoming for the skipper. Switzerland remain two goals to the good in Baku, and two goals behind Wales in Group A.&nbsp;Loris Benito and&nbsp;Admir Mehmedi are both coming on;&nbsp;Mario Gavranovic and Ruben Vargas have already arrived. They've got just over five minutes - plus injury time - to see if they can seal second.

Switzerland prepare for final top-two push

It's hard to say if disciplinary points will need to come into play today, but that red card for&nbsp;Ethan Ampadu, along with Joe Allen's earlier booking, has very much left Wales at a disadvantage if it does come down to that. Chris Gunter has just been shown a yellow, as has&nbsp;Matteo Pessina, for a bit of a to-do with each other. Only Granit Xhaka has been booked for Switzerland today. Turkey have been shown three yellows, with&nbsp;Hakan Calhanoglu and&nbsp;Mehmet Zeki Celik the others to be flagged, but those are pretty moot right now.

Card count

Granit Xhaka goes so close to finding a fourth for Switzerland! Somewhere, a Welshman just released a very uneasy breath. The Swiss captain lines up a free-kick inside the "D" of Turkey's box after Caglar Soyuncu is booked for a foul there. He smashes it against the right post. An inch to the left and that would have taken the back of the net off. Switzerland are still very much in this one.

Gareth Bale! That would have been one of the finishes of the tournament, on a day where they appear to be popping up for fun in Baku. The Wales captain just can't bring down a volley inside his box, attempting to hang it low enough to get the better of&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma, a man who has very much had a quiet game.

Still nervous, Wales fans?

Normal service is resumed in Baku! A major milestone has just been ticked off for Switzerland too, after&nbsp;Xherdan Shaqiri finishes a fast break with a lovely lifted shot inside the Turkish box. They've now scored more goals than Wales at this tournament. They still hold a goal difference of -1, thanks to that unexpected Turkey response - but net another here and hope that Italy does them a favour in Rome, and this gets very hairy for Rob Page and company.

Planned or not,&nbsp;Kieffer Moore is on for Wales, to try and offer some extra firepower up front, as they aim to solve the issue of having one less body on the pitch while they try to chase the game. Danny Ward is pressed into action once again though, with a close-range stop to ensure that Italy cannot bury a second deep inside his box. Emboldened by their lead and numerical advantage, the Azzurri are bouncing right now. Dan James did have a free-kick near the opposition box a few moments before, but it was tame at best. Once again,&nbsp;Marco Verratti continues to orchestrate this performance.

WHAT A BEAST OF A SHOT THAT IS! Turkey pull one back through&nbsp;Irfan Kahveci! Anything&nbsp;Xherdan Shaqiri can do, someone can do it better, apparently. Afford too much time by Switzerland outside the box, the&nbsp;Fenerbahce man turns on a pivot and launches a right-side screamer into the far, top-left corner. Pick that one out. Is the comeback on for Turkey?

He's already tasted success with that gorgeous curled lob earlier but&nbsp;Xherdan Shaqiri wants more. He won't get them like that however. From the centre of the box, his right-footed effort goes into orbit. The International Space Station might be able to return that one the next time they pass over.

Shaqiri blazes one over

It's a Roman nightmare for Wales - they're down a man for the rest of this game!&nbsp;Ethan Ampadu has been sent off! He comes in hard on&nbsp;Federico Bernardeschi in the centre-circle, apparently stamping on the foot of the Italy man, and&nbsp;Ovidiu Hategan shows him a straight red card! Wales protest, obviously, but his mind is unchanged, and VAR does not intervene to overturn it. Rob Page's evening just got a whole lot more dicey. &nbsp;

RED CARD: Italy 1-0 Wales

Both teams have come out swinging in Baku, and how! It is still Switzerland looking sharper, that cloud nine morale boost of two goals keeping them very much on the front foot, and&nbsp;Steven Zuber forces two saves, along with&nbsp;Breel Embolo. Burak Yilmaz sticks a header wide and high in between those efforts though, as Turkey continue to seek a response. They've clearly been told to go out swinging, if this - as it very much looks like - is to be their last stand.

Flurry of chances opens half

Watch this one very carefully, folks. Joe Allen has just picked up a yellow card for a foul on&nbsp;Andrea Belotti, after hacking him down on the counter from behind. Italy's subsequent free-kick, whipped in by&nbsp;Federico Bernardeschi, goes bruisingly close, beating Ward and rattling away off the left post, in a lucky escape for Wales - but that booking is worth keeping in find. Depending how these two games finish in Group A,&nbsp;disciplinary points could be very crucial to who makes it through with Italy.

Have Italy got more in store?

Both games have restarted within half a minute of each other - and for one of these sides, it will definitely be the final half of their Euro 2020 adventure. (It'll be Turkey, unless we're in for an&nbsp;M. Night Shyamalan-style twist of superb proportions.) There's just the one change between the four sides;&nbsp;Francesco Acerbi replaces Leonardo Bonucci for Italy.

Unbreakable?

Haris Seferovic and Xherdan Shaqiri both scored from outside the box, the first Swiss players to do so at any European Championship in that first half, with each of their nine goals in the competition before today coming from inside the area. Turkey's defence has been torn apart by them and their team-mates. It's so frustrating for Senol Gunes, after that bright start, that his team have faded the way they have.

Swiss enjoying long-distance delights

The door is far from closed for Wales - one goal, after all, is very little in the game of football - and they have had their chances too. But they have very much been few and far in-between at Stadio Olimpico, with Italy currently keeping them under lock and key. Were it not for the Azzurri's more wayward finishing - only one goal from 10 shots and with seven players spending more time in the opposition half than their own suggests their dominance - this could be a much bigger result.

High-flying Azzurri match old record

Likewise, the referee blows for the interval in Baku and Switzerland look on top of the world, high-fiving and embracing as they wander off into the sheds. Vladimir Petkovic's team have all but confirmed Turkey will be the second side to exit Euro 2020, unless some truly remarkable scenes are in store. More to the point, they have notched two essential goals and look perfectly capable of scoring more - goals that will only improve their goal difference and, more to the point, their overall total, should it come down to a tiebreaker situation with Wales.

Italy have been excellent value for their lead, their supposed second-string side not only more than a match for Wales' first-team but every inch their superior, it would seem. Nervous, Wales fans?

Matteo Pessina, that could have almost been two! It is a shocker of a switch-off from Wales' defence again, only a fleeting touch carying it beyond the Italian for a corner. That brings even more trouble, and a finish placed straight at Ward is almost carried over the goal-line by the shotstopper himself. Matteo Pessina beats everyone to it, in line with the near post, and flicks it off the outside of his boot to help it on its way towards the left side of the woodwork, where it nestles past Danny Ward's dive. The much-changed hosts have just struck a hammer-blow to Wales hopes of easy automatic qualification today.

Mert Muldur from distance! My word, that isn't too far off the mark. It might be drifting out to the left of the post, but Sommer takes no chances with a diving stop. Turkey know that they need to tighten their straps now. Two goals down, their Euro 2020 campaign is surely over. They're about to become only the second side to be eliminated this year, after North Macedonia - unless they can complete a minor miracle in Baku.

Will Swiss success be enough?

Italy haven't wanted to find the back of the net in this tournament, but they are struggling to find the mark now, despite laying on chance after chance. Marco Verratti and&nbsp;Federico Chiesa both spray tough efforts wide of the mark on the right, and then another&nbsp;Belotti cross skitters past everyone maybe four yards away from the goal-line. Wales themselves pick up a chance in the midst, Chris Gunter tickling the roof of the netting with a header.

Italy burn further opportunities

Xherdan Shaqiri with the top-corner curler! Blimey, what a finish that is! Turkey have come absolutely undone in Baku and they're punished with a second now, Switzerland afforded too much time again to play themselves around the edge of the box. The Liverpool man many wanted to drop gets it from almost bang in front, 20 or so yards out. He looks up, and curls an almost near-lob shot into the top-right corner, bent beautifully to beat Cakir. The Swiss are in dreamland.

Andrea Belotti lays on a golden square ball through the six-yard area now - and Italy are an inch away from burying it past Danny Ward at long last, the delivery just a little too far away from the gangle of outstretched legs, in attack and defence, that likely would have turned it into the net. The Azzurri's latest chance comes after Neco Williams held up the ball around the hosts' box, to give Wales an opportunity to exert some pressure - without much in the way of gain.

Belotti lays on golden chance!

Moments after Mert Muldur gives Turkey their first proper shot since they conceded - with Yann Sammer making a fine stop in the top corner -&nbsp;Seferovic forces a save himself down the other end as he hunts a quick double. Steven Zuber blazes over an attempt for Switzerland only a few plays later. They are keeping themselves quite busy so far, the Swiss.

Turkey kept on toes after opener

Two more Italian chances, two more moments for Wales to look a bit sketchy around the back.&nbsp;Rafael Toloi skews one off-target but&nbsp;Matteo Pessina's right-footed effort from close-range requires Danny Ward to drop on it like a stone in sharpish fashion. A ball flicks out of play near Roberto Mancini and he back-heels it with the air of the coolest man inside Stadio Olimpico right now. He probably is, to be honest.

Italy continue to rattle Welsh cage

Andrea Belotti just puts Italy's first proper shot of the game wide to the right post, but the Azzurri have been absolutely hammering Danny Ward's box so far. Far be it a disjointed performance, this looks like a side all with a point to prove under Roberto Mancini. Of course, a dynamite turn here could bode well for forcing a rethink in the last-16. A lot of players will want to put themselves in the shop window. Ward goes low to save an effort from Emerson now. There's nothing pure dynamite yet but it should be enough to ring alarm bells in Welsh heads at this point.

Swivel finish

Senol Gunes' head must be going into overdrive after that. His side's hopes of making the last-16 have taken an absolute hammer-blow. That's six goals conceded and none scored so far at Euro 2020. Even if his side come back to win this, they are going to need a dramatic swing when it comes to goal difference. Switzerland, as it stands, have consolidated third - but the goalless start in Rome between Italy and Wales means they cannot vault the latter into second just yet.

Turkey stunned after quickfire opener

They may have made eight changes but Italy do not look the worse for wear when it comes to pressing downfield in these opening exchanges in Rome. Danny Ward, in goal once more, is forced out a few times in quick succession to field long balls his defenders seem a little too wary of at this early juncture. Wales are taking a little while to settle into the game.

Italy mount steady pressure

HELLO!&nbsp;Haris Seferovic, with the first counter of the game, has struck an absolute pearler from outside the box! Turkey have been absolutely caught out there, a long ball pumped down the right flank and held up all too easily by their opponents. With no way through, possession is cut back along the edge of the penalty area to the far side for&nbsp;Steven Zuber. He plays&nbsp;Seferovic back in, expecting a one-two - but instead, the Benfica striker turns on a dime and buries an absolute beauty in at the right post, sprayed across&nbsp;Ugurcan Cakir superbly. What an opening salvo!

It's a lively on at the Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan and, perhaps not too surprisingly, it is the designated away side backed by the roar of a home crowd who are making themselves known. Ozan Tufan blazes a finish over the crossbar on the back of a corner, and then&nbsp;&nbsp;Kaan Ayhan sees a subsequent effort palmed away by a good Yann Sommer save. One-way traffic against Switzerland so far.

Four national anthems, and, as has become the custom to say during Euro 2020, all of them absolutely slap. Who would compose an alternative Welsh national anthem these days? Manic Street Preachers, those doyens of the alt-rock scene, probably would. That too, one would expect, would absolutely slap. Wales look absolutely up for this one. So too do Turkey in Baku, the roar of the crowd pushing their crescendo on.

1,930 miles are between Baku and Rome, and it's getting underway in both. All four sides are set to emerge ahead of the national anthems. Late strong finish incoming in Baku?

A horrific 2020 for Vladimir Petkovic saw his side win no games - indeed, their only victory was a walkover awarded against Ukraine. But then until the start of this tournament, they had tasted sunnier results. Wins against Bulgaria and the USMNT were the pick of the bunch - but this may be their toughest test yet, given what is at stake. Until Euro 2020 got underway, Senol Gunes' side were unbeaten in 2021. Two defeats by a combined five-goal margin has put paid to their fine form - and leaves them facing an uphill climb today. They will need a drastic turnaround in fortunes.

Can Bale deliver captain's knock?

So then, the simple maths. Italy haven't lost a game since 2018, embarking on a near-three-year-run with no defeats to their name. Their defence has done wonders too - they haven't conceded since a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in October. Wales are no slouches themselves however, with just three losses since the start of 2020 - against England, Belgium and France respectively. They've mounted victories over the Czech Republic and Mexico too. The hosts are two from two at Euro 2020, and would love to make it three from three. Their visitors however know that victory could vault them to the summit of Group A and had them a potentially favourable draw. It's set up very nicely.

A box-office bonanza to come?

Ah, the weight of expectations. Surely, when you were chatting with your friends before Euro 2020 got underway, one of them ventured that Turkey were the dark horses of the competition, a potential wrinkle in Italy's plans to come through Group A without a problem. Well, it's been more misery than magic for the once-supposed stallions of the Crescent-Stars - yet, remarkably, they are not out of this race yet. Victory in Baku against Switzerland would hoist them to third - and if they can notch up a not inconsiderable margin of victory too, they may stand a chance of an unlikely knockout stage berth. Senol Gunes has his work cut out - but the dream, for now, remains there for the taking.

No Turkish delight... so far

They'll need to mount a convincing defeat of Turkey in the hotbed of Baku and hope that Italy's much-changed side can do them a favour, but Switzerland may feel they have a point to prove after their first two games. Nominally seeded second as a qualification group winner, they have underperformed so far, pegged back by a late Wales goal and then given a rough ride by the Azzurri. If&nbsp;Vladimir Petkovic catches a glance of Mancini's changes, he may feel quite aggrieved - but it will surely only fuel a side determined to prove themselves to stay firmly in the race for the last-16.

A Change Is Gonna Come

With their last-16 place wrapped up last time out, it isn't too surprising that Roberto Mancini has opted to let several of Italy's proverbial second-stringers have a chance to start in a major tournament. Giorgio Chiellini's first-half injury last time out obviously makes for an enforced change, but outside of&nbsp;Leonardo Bonucci, only Chelsea midfielder Jorginho and goalkeeper&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma have kept their spot, ensuring that several major talents remain injury-free heading to the knockout rounds. Make no mistake, this is still an Italy side capable of finding a result - but could Wales have enough nous in the bag to end the Azzurri's near-three-year unbeaten run in Rome today? They'll certainly fancy themselves against that lineup.

Mancini opts for risk-free run-out

Mention the words Euro 2016 anywhere across the United Kingdom, and two flashpoints spring to mind. One is England's abject humiliation - draws with Russia and Slovakia in the group stage and a last-16 exit to Iceland. The other is of Wales' triumphant march to the semi-finals, much unfancied underdogs guided by an indomitable spirit under Chris Coleman, beating off Northern Ireland and Belgium on the way to a valiant exit against Portugal. The countdown is on

Liverpool attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has kept his spot in an apparent 3-4-1-2 formation for today's nominal home side, as&nbsp;Vladimir Petkovic makes only minor changes to the side routed by Italy, with&nbsp;Silvan Widmer&nbsp;and&nbsp;Steven Zuber&nbsp;both drafted in. Early team news for one of those games now, and it is a series of wholesale changes from Italy manager Roberto Mancini. The former Manchester City boss vowed he would make the swaps and he has done so, with&nbsp;Leonardo Bonnucci just one of three players to remain from the side that beat Switzerland. Wales meanwhile have opted to make a trio of swaps, resting&nbsp;Ben Davies, Chris Mepham and Kieffer Moore - players all a booking away from a suspension. Victory for Turkey, in a stadium where they are likely to hold something of a partisan advantage given their close links with Azerbaijan, would be enough to see them finish third, though they can go no higher. Switzerland, on the other hand, know that a draw would see them come third in Group A - but that their haul of two points would leave them very much an outside bet to succeed in the third-place rankings. A win would put them on four points, and this is where it could get a little mathematical. If Wales lose in Rome, both sides would be level on four points - and a number of tiebreakers, from goals scored to disciplinary points accumulated, may be needed to split the pair for second place.

Twisty tiebreakers set to play a part?

Let's cut to the chase, shall we? Italy are safe and sound in the mix for the next round, an imperious six-goal streak across two games setting them out as arguably the form side of the tournament so far. They have six points. Two behind them on four are today's opponents Wales. Given that a four-point haul is likely enough to see them through on third-place rankings come Wednesday, they may be safe already. But in simple mathematical terms, a draw for them in Rome takes them to five - a total neither Switzerland with a solitary point, nor Turkey with zero to show so far, can catch regardless of their own result in Baku at the same time.
