Last week, the Wolverhampton-born coach returned to Kaizer Chiefs for a second chance with Amakhosi and the prospect of reviving South Africa’s fallen giants.
He previously oversaw a glorious era between 2012 and 2015—winning PSL titles in 2013 and 2015—but has his work cut out to repeat the feat.

Mulee just can’t keep away from the Kenya national team hotseat, having held the reins on five separate occasions since 2003.
He’s currently in charge of the national side, having returned in December, but must rebuild the Harambee Stars after their failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Clearly a fan of life in Port Elizabeth, Heric has held the reins at a dozen different clubs in South Africa, but there are only two where he went back—Chippa United and Black Leopards.

Sticking with the PSL, German coach Middendorp just can’t get enough of life at Maritzburg United.
The 62-year-old first joined The Team of Choice in 2009, only to last until 2011, and then lasted only slightly longer when he returned in early 2012, only to be gone by late 2013.

Currently back at the club he (clearly) loves since November 2020, Middendorp helped Maritzburg finish 13th in the 2020-21 PSL.

One of the most successful coaches in Caf competitions in recent decades, Jose enjoyed magnificent success during three stints with Al-Ahly.
He has won the Caf Champions League on four occasions, reached four consecutive finals between 2005 and 2008, and helped the Cairo giants enjoy a 55-game unbeaten run.

El-Badry also couldn’t resist the allure of a second…and third…stint with Ahly after getting the call again.
He took over as head coach in 2009 following a spell as Director of Football, then returned in 2012, and again handled the team from 2016 until 2018.

Across his three spells with the club, El-Badry won three league championships and one continental crown.

The 60-year-old coach never truly got the credit he deserved for qualifying Ghana for the 2014 World Cup—defeating an imperious Egypt side in the Caf playoffs—only for the Black Stars to come a cropper in Brazil.
He returned for a second—less successful—spell in 2017, taking Ghana to the Last 16 of the 2019 Nations Cup, only to lose his job in early 2020.

Kwesi Appiah (Ghana)

Conversely to Appiah, Renard enjoyed greater success in his second stint at an African national side—in this case Zambia—than he did in his first time in charge.
After managing Chipolopolo between 2008 and 2010, he was coaxed away by the petrodollars of Angola, but returned to Zambia in 2011 with unfinished business.

The Frenchman, of course, would write one of the most incredible chapters in Africa Cup of Nations history in 2012 when he oversaw the Southern Africans’ miraculous Afcon triumph in Gabon.
