Should Salah go to the Olympics? – The view from North Africa

The presence of one of Africa’s greatest ever players at the Olympic Games hangs in the balance.
Mohamed Salah appears keen to represent Egypt, the country’s Olympic committee are obviously keen to recruit him, but Liverpool—understandably—are determined not to allow him to participate.

It’s a classic club-vs-country clash, but how will it end? With Salah representing the Pharaohs as an overage player in Tokyo? Or will the Liverpool superstar watch on as his compatriots challenge for the gold?

Here are the views of the Goal Arabic team as they give us the local insight on this Liverpool vs Egypt tangle.

Salah to the Olympics

He shouldn't go! He already played in 2012 and was of great help to the team, but now if he takes part it will affect his preparation for the new season [with Liverpool].
As much as Egypt will be affected by his absence, they also need him in top form for the Africa Cup of Nations, and they should put this in consideration because requesting to let him leave twice for national duty [in a single season] wouldn't be easy to ask of Liverpool.

Haytham Mohamed

In my opinion, Salah should not join Egypt for the Olympics because the last season was long and he needs to rest to be ready for next season with Liverpool.
Salah already participated [at the Games] in 2012 and he will leave Liverpool next January to join Egypt for the Afcon, so there’s no need to be at the Olympics.

I think he will be summoned for the Olympic team, but he won't join due to the reasons stated above.

I think it’s a bit unfair to the squad who achieved success at the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations [in Egypt in 2019] and qualified for Tokyo.
The team called up overage players in 2012 and the team did not progress to the next stage, so it’s not about success…it’s about giving these guys the chance to stand up for themselves.

Salah always reports for duty when it comes to the national team, no doubt he wants to be part of the U-23 team, but I suspect he won’t this time.

It’s been a long season with Liverpool, and he had to play till the very last minute of the season chasing the Golden Boot.

He needs some rest, and going to Tokyo won’t help much.

I don't think it's right for him to play in the Olympics for the following reasons…
Firstly, it’s been a long season for him at Liverpool because of Covid, so he needs to rest, plus he will go on to play in the Africa Cup of Nations in the middle of the season, so this will already make this campaign even tougher than the previous one.

Finally, there are doubts about his future, so it's better to focus on that, by either renewing his contract or leaving for another challenge.

That's my opinion but I think what's going to happen is that he will play at the Olympics because of his competitive attitude.

Similarly, the Egyptian team need him in the competition more than anyone else as he is our most important player.

Salah should not join the Olympic team, and nor will he. As Ahmed Megahed, the head of the Tripartite Committee told On Time Sports: “I do not want to say that Salah’s chances of participating in the Olympics are non-existent, but they are not big.
“We talked to him and he expressed his desire to represent Egypt in the Olympics and to lead the team,” he added. “We addressed Liverpool about Salah, and the response came that they are waiting for the approval of the technical staff.”

Salah shouldn’t join the Olympic team as he would miss pre-season preparation and this would not be a good start to the season; if Egypt went further, it would cost Salah a lot.

So the boys must do the job on their own, taking advantage of the ongoing football events—the European Championship and Copa America—which mean that many of the other teams will lose their most valuable players as well.
