Ramos, Upamecano & the best XI left out of Euro 2020 squads

The most expensive goalkeeper of all time will play no part in this summer's European Championship.&nbsp;
Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Club in 2018 for a record-breaking&nbsp;€80 million (£69m/$88m) but the Spain international has since struggled terribly to live up to his historic price tag.

Indeed, the 26-year-old was relegated to the role of understudy following the arrival of Edouard Mendy at Stamford Bridge last summer.

Kepa may now be a Champions League winner but his bit-part role in Chelsea's 2020-21 campaign made his omission from the Spain squad wholly unsurprising.

Dayot Upamecano has just signed for Bayern Munich for €42.5m (£37m/$52m). He's considered one of the most promising centre-backs in world football right now.
However, Didier Deschamps could find no&nbsp;place in his France squad for the&nbsp;RB Leipzig defender, who was instead included in his country's Under-21s starting line-up&nbsp;for their European Championship quarter-final loss to Netherlands on Monday night.

The sad fact of the matter is that the veteran centre-back hasn't played that much in 2021 because of a succession of niggling injuries.

La Roja coach Luis Enrique could, of course, have taken a gamble on Ramos, who is&nbsp;the most-capped player in the history of the Spanish national team.

However, the former Sevilla man has completed 90 minutes just once since January.

One of the signings of the 2020-21 season, Sven Botman joined Lille from Ajax last summer for just €8m (£6.9m/$9.8m).
The left-footed&nbsp;Dutch defender was a colossus at the back for Lille, starting 37 of 38 games as Christophe Galtier's side sensationally pipped Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title.

However, despite receiving his first Netherlands call-up last November, Botman failed to make Frank de Boer's panel for the European Championship.

Hans Hateboer looked a shoo-in for the Netherlands squad for this summer's Euros, after earning a recall to the Oranje squad last year thanks to his sensational form for Atalanta.
Indeed, the attack-minded wing-back, who plays on the right flank for Gian Piero Gasperini's scintillating Serie A side, earned eight caps in 2020 alone.

However, he failed to recapture his best form after injury interrupted the tail end of his season and he was surprisingly overlooked by Frank de Boer for the Euros as a result.

France boast one of the deepest pools of talent international football, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that an 18-year-old midfielder has failed to make the cut.&nbsp;
However, Eduardo Camavinga is a truly special talent, a player already being linked with the likes of Real Madrid.&nbsp;

In addition, he has already been capped three times by Les Bleus, even marking his first start for his country, last October, with his first goal: a spectacular overhead kick that made him France's youngest scorer in more than 100 years.

Time is on Camavinga's side, of course. Indeed, if the Rennes starlet continues his current rate of progression, he's likely to make&nbsp;France's World Cup 2022 panel.

But it was still something of a shock that Deschamps didn't deem him worthy of a place in his Euros squad.

Roberto Mancini handed Sandro Tonali his first Italy call-up before the midfielder had even appeared in Serie A. That just goes to show you how highly rated the former Brescia playmaker was back in 2018.&nbsp;
Tonali is still regarded as one of the Azzurri's most promising players but he's coming off the back of a trying first season at AC Milan, which explains why he never really came close to making Mancini's squad for the Euros.

The Lodi native has only just turned 21, though, and he could easily make a strong push for Qatar 2022 during what is likely to be a far more impressive second season at San Siro.

After years of being overlooked by France boss Didier Deschamps, Aymeric Laporte decided to declare for Spain in order to play at the Euros. How Theo Hernandez must have wished he had that option.
Despite being capped at Under-20 level by his country, Hernandez has never earned a senior cap, which is bizarre when one considers he's been the best left-back in Serie A this season.

Indeed, the former Real Madrid defender, who hails from Marseille, racked up eights and seven assists in all competitions as AC Milan secured a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2014.

Julian Draxler has just signed a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain that binds him to the Ligue 1 giants until 2024, yet one wonders if he would be better off moving elsewhere.
The versatile forward featured 34 times for PSG in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and creating a further four.&nbsp;

However, he started only 18 games and there's no doubt that his lack of regular game time played a major role in his omission from the Germany squad for the Euros.&nbsp;

Draxler is still only 27, has been capped 56 times by his country and has a World Cup winners' medal but remains an unfulfilled talent.

Massimiliano Allegri has just returned to Juventus and speculation is rife that he could look to bring Moise Kean back to Turin.
It's easy to understand why, given the former Bianconeri forward is coming off the most prolific season of his young career, having scored 19 goals in all competitions during a loan spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Italy boss Roberto Mancini has decided against including Kean in his squad for the Euros, which is surprising given doubts remain over both Ciro Immobile and Andrea Belotti's efficacy at the very highest level.

At the very least, the Everton-owned Kean, who has already netted twice for the Azzurri,&nbsp;could have been an excellent option off the bench.

When Marco Asensio made it four goals in four consecutive games with his strike in Real Madrid's Champions League win over Liverpool in April, it looked like the versatile winger might be back to his best.
The 25-year-old had seen his career hindered by a couple of injury-ravaged seasons but there were undeniable signs that he was hitting form again at a most inopportune time.

However, Asensio netted only once during Madrid's title run-in and was in and out of the starting line-up as Zinedine Zidane's side lost their Liga crown to city rivals Atletico.

A poor start to the season also killed off any hope Asensio had of adding to his 25 Spain caps. A player who lined out 12 times for Spain in 2018 alone has been deemed surplus to requirements by Luis Enrique.
