Africa's biggest bust-ups: Eto'o & Guardiola, Mane & Klopp, Keshi & Taiwo

Cameroon legend Eto’o won a treble with Barcelona in 2009, but was still ruthlessly cast adrift by Guardiola in the aftermath of that success.
Looking for a different type of striker to add to his Barca dream team, Guardiola offered Eto’o to Internazionale as part of the deal to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the Camp Nou.

“My lawyer at the time told me that the club had put me up for sale on the transfer market. I said: 'Really?' He said: 'Yes, at Guardiola's request'," Eto'o told BeIn Sports in 2019 of the circumstances of his transfer to Inter in 2009.

"It's clear today, that move, and the opportunity that Pep gave me has gone down in history because it permitted me to be an even bigger part of football history by going to Inter. He allowed Inter to strike the best deal in football history."

Eto’o ultimately had the last laugh, winning yet another treble with Jose Mourinho’s Inter in 2010.

No stranger to controversy, Eto’o also had a few run-ins with the Cameroon federation.
In December 2011, he was suspended by the FA for 15 matches after leading the team to refuse to play a friendly match in Algeria.

Ultimately, the country’s president Paul Biya had to step in to resolve the dispute and ensure Eto’o’s suspension was reduced, although the forward never again hit the heights with Cameroon and stepped away from the national team for good less then three years later.

Boateng brought the curtain down on his international career in spectacular fashion at the 2014 World Cup, when he—along with Sulley Muntari—were sent home from the camp.
The duo were reportedly chastised by coach Kwesi Appiah—even though Boateng complained they’d only been ‘joking around’—and were dismissed early from training.

The Schalke 04 midfielder then later claimed that Appiah had insulted him, before the two experienced players were sent away from Brazil.

Ghana crashed out in the group stage.

The late Big Boss was beloved by many of his players, but not—it seems—by ex-left-back Taiwo, with the defender claiming that Keshi brought the curtain down on his international career.
More than that, the former AC Milan man suggested that the ex-Super Eagles coach’s ‘dirty dealings’ were the reason why he ended his international career.

“I am someone who doesn't want dirty glory and in my life, I have never been involved in what is not clean and that was why I packed my bags and left the Super Eagles,” Taiwo told Legit last year.

''I cannot work or stay where I see that is dirty because I am serving a clean God, and if I am in an area that is not clean, I will have to leave the place,” he added.

''When they appointed Keshi as coach, he was acting somehow in which I told myself that it was time for me to leave the Super Eagles.

''I packed my bags and I told my wife and family that I cannot be involved in dirty deals.”

Keshi was a Nations Cup champion with Nigeria in 2013.

A low moment in a disappointing season for Mane came at the end of Liverpool’s testing campaign when he appeared to shrug off an attempted hug from the Reds manager.
The incident came at the conclusion of a victory over Manchester United, with the Senegal forward having been unceremoniously dropped from Klopp’s starting XI.

The German coach attempted to dismiss the incident in the immediate aftermath of the event, before later telling journalists that Mane had apologised for his behaviour.

Like Eto’o, Yaya was another high-profile Barcelona star cut loose by Guardiola, although the Ivorian also had the ignominy of being sold by the Spaniard twice…with the pair also parting ways after some shared successes at Manchester City.
Guardiola’s arrival somewhat curtailed Yaya’s influence at City, with the midfield powerhouse later suggesting the coach had “problems with Africans wherever he goes.”

Toure later apologised for the comments, although it doesn’t appear as though there’s too much love lost between the pair.

One of the most infamous clashes in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations came in the 2006 semi-final bout between Egypt and Senegal.
Mido was furious at having been substituted off by head coach and Pharaohs legend Shehata, and the pair engaged in a sensational touchline row as the match continued.

Egypt ultimately progressed—and defeated the Ivory Coast in the final—although Mido was absent for this meeting.

Shehata later overlooked the ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker for his 2010 Afcon-winning squad, while they were also reunited at SC Zamalek.

Back in 2018, Kaizer Chiefs moved to quell rumours that there was friction in the camp between star striker Paez and coach Solinas.
The forward had struggled to make his mark during the early portion of the campaign, and reacted unhappily after being replaced by Bernard Parker soon after the hour mark in a cup game against Bloemfontein Celtic.

Like Mane and Klopp, Paez refused to shake the head coach’s hand, before later claiming that the incident had been a ‘misunderstanding’.

Paez never truly recovered at Chiefs, and departed the club when his contract ended in 2019.
