Afcon 2019: Five things Kenya learnt against Algeria

Gor Mahia star Joash Onyango has established himself as a reliable defender in the Harambee Stars playing unit, and his untimely injury proved exactly that. Musa Mohammed and Joseph Okumu struggled to deal with Algeria attackers especially in the first half, failing to intercept and clear dangerous balls.

Onyango was missed

The Victor Wanyama, Dennis Odhiambo and Eric Johanna partnership did not work at all. Save for Wanyama who was forced at times to commit unnecessary fouls, Odhiambo and Johanna struggled to match their opponents and were 'pedestrians'. They should be benched in Harambee Stars next game against Tanzania.

Kenyan midfielders were sluggish

The Sebastien Migne led side resorted to long balls in search for&nbsp;isolated striker Michael Olunga. There were no buildups from the back in the first 70 minutes or so. Relying on long balls resulted in the loss of possession and at one point, Algeria had about 75% possession.

The long balls did not work

Harambee Stars might have beaten the likes of Ghana during the qualifiers, but the way they played against Algeria proved a lot has to be done for the country to rub shoulders with the best in Africa. Kenya were literally outplayed in each department, and it could have been worse if the North African side had utilized the chances they created, especially in the first half.

Kenya is still far away!

The duo had almost zero impact in the game; nothing meaningful came from them and they gave away possession easily. The introduction of Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma, Johanna Omollo and later on Ismael Gonzalez stabilized the otherwise sinking ship and maybe Kenya could have grabbed a consolation had the coach started with the three players.
